History
Skippack Village has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century. The village was first settled in 1719 and was named after the Skippe family, who were early landowners in the area. Later, the village played an important role in the American Revolutionary War and was a stop for the Continental Army on their way to Valley Forge.
Settlement and Early Development: Skippack Village was settled by German immigrants, mainly from the Palatinate region, around the early 1700s. They were drawn to the fertile lands and the opportunities for religious freedom in the region. The village developed as an agricultural community, with farms and homesteads dotting the landscape.
Role in the American Revolution: During the American Revolution, Skippack Village played a significant role in the war effort. The Skippack area became a strategic location, as it was situated between the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge and British-controlled Philadelphia. When George Washington and his army of 11,000 conducted their all-night march to the Battle of Germantown through Skippack on Oct. 3, 1777, they saw a little village of 29 houses. The village served as a supply base, providing food, clothing, and other necessities to the troops. By 1850, the village was considered an industrial complex.
Growth and Development: As the years passed, Skippack Village continued to grow and thrive. In the 19th century, the village expanded with the construction of mills, shops, and taverns along Skippack Creek. The mills, such as sawmills and gristmills, utilized the water power provided by the creek.

In 1972, the Skippack Historical Society was formed to promote and protect the heritage of the village.
